I am obsessed with the idea of doing a long through-hike with my kids, now ages seven and nine, sometime before they leave to find their way in the world. We may do this hike only in short segments or shards that might ultimately add up to something complete and impressive, or might be simply a series of four- and five-day hikes in the San Gabriels and Sierra Nevadas. On the other end of the spectrum, we may end up taking a gap year at some point and doing the PCT. Much of it depends on them and who they turn into as they grow up. For now, I’m seeding the project with a commitment to as many overnight outings as we can manage, so that they can do at least some of their growing up on the trail.
